By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · October 9, 2026 **Before the tea:** What follows is a recap of **public reporting** from Georgia Recorder (2026-10-05) and Medicaid Monitor (2026-10-07) — not Pair’s opinion, and not a roast of any clinic. Corrections: **contact@pairaba.com**. Girl. You’re interviewing at a Georgia clinic. Then someone mentions, “Yeah, we take Medicaid foster kids.” Here’s the question worth asking: When Medicaid reimbursement rates changed, did clinician pay change with them? **What happened** Amerigroup, the Medicaid plan serving foster children in Georgia, announced changes to its ABA reimbursement rates. Effective September 1, reimbursement for some direct ABA services dropped by **30%**, while parent-training rates increased. State Rep. Lee Hawkins has been citing industry surveys: about **75%** of affected clinics expect to reduce or stop serving foster kids within three months. More than **90%** expect to reduce or stop taking new patients. **Why clinicians feel it first** Rate cuts land on schedules, overtime math, and whether your hours still look like a paycheck. **Three questions before you sign (or stay)** **1. How do you protect clinician pay when a major payer cuts rates?** **2. What happens to caseloads if foster / Amerigroup volume drops?** **3. What’s your Medicaid / foster mix right now, and how are you adjusting?** If those answers are crisp, a Medicaid-heavy shop can still be a green flag. If they’re hand-wavy, the mission statement won’t cover your rent. **Pair’s Take** Pair screens clinics the way the floor screens clinics: pay protection, caseload honesty, and whether leadership can say the plan out loud without sweating. Georgia’s foster ABA cut is public news — treat it like data, not drama. **Want clinics that already talk like adults about payers?** Tell us your location, setting, schedule, salary goals, and non-negotiables. We're not naming employers. Corrections: **contact@pairaba.com**. Girl. You just passed. The group chat is already doing that thing where someone drops "six figures" like it's a personality test. So of course you open Reddit and ask: *is $90–100k+ right out of grad school actually realistic in ABA?* Short answer from the crowd: **yes — in a lot of markets.** Longer answer: the sticker number is not the offer. **The scene Reddit actually cast** Some reported starting around $80–85k, with $90k+ becoming more common after a few years. Others said larger companies, higher-cost-of-living areas, and some school settings can hit that $90–100k+ range earlier. One BCBA accepted an offer around $90k before finishing their first year—and even turned down a $100k offer. Their setup: about six clients, 27.5 billable hours per week, fully in-clinic. **The plot twist nobody puts on the offer slide** Some clinicians warned that higher starting salaries can also come with larger caseloads, less supervision, and heavier productivity expectations. That's the Pair decode in one line: sticker salary ≠ sustainable math. **Three questions before you celebrate the $100k** **1. What's the weekly billable requirement — and what happens when cancellations hit?** **2. What's the caseload range for a first-year BCBA, and who actually supervises me?** **3. Why is the number this high?** **Pair's Take** We screen the offer the way the floor screens the offer: pay **plus** caseload **plus** billables **plus** supervision. Your cert is expensive. Don't rent it to a shop that bought your silence with a round number. **Want offers where the math is already green?** Tell us your location, setting, schedule, salary goals, and non-negotiables. We'll show you what's open. Girl. You finally get the BCBA cert. Then the email lands… They don't have a BCBA seat right now. The "bridge" offer: work at an RBT-adjacent rate (crowd was talking ~$42/hr) until Medicaid credentialing and staffing catch up… Cue the group chat: "is this even okay?" Last week we said ownership isn't the green flag for PE. This week's plot twist: BCBA-owned isn't either. **The scene Reddit actually cast** New BCBA at a small BCBA-owned clinic — the anti-PE dream on paper — then you're filling gaps on direct while you wait for credentialing. Loud takes: Decline. Start date should follow credentialing. Who supervises you? How does billing work? Offer questions, not vibe questions. **The other side:** a paid bridge can beat unpaid waiting. Counter-counter: Medicaid may reimburse retroactively once credentialing is complete. If their plan depends on you taking the hit? Pattern > panic. **Three questions before you accept the bridge** 1. What's the hard start date as a BCBA — and what happens if credentialing slips? **"Until staffing catches up" is not a date.** 2. What am I billing as, who supervises me, and what rate on day one vs day credentialed? **If foggy, the logo won't save you.** 3. If Medicaid reimburses once I'm credentialed, why an RBT rate while I wait? **The math should math.** Clear answers? Glow-up. Vague? "Family-owned" might be branding. **Pair's Take** We don't romanticize PE *or* the BCBA-owned sticker. We screen start date, rate, billing path, supervision, and whether the clinic can say the plan out loud. Don't rent your cert out as a temporary RBT costume unless the bridge is real, dated, and paid like you earned the letters. **Want clinics that already look like green flags?** Tell us location, setting, schedule, salary goals, and non-negotiables. We'll show you what's open. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/bcba-owned-isnt-a-green-flag.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # Ownership Isn’t the Green Flag By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · October 1, 2026 Newer BCBAs are trying to avoid the wrong companies like their careers depend on it. Fair. But Reddit came with a plot twist: PE ownership might not be the red flag you think it is. **The twist Reddit keeps repeating** Ownership is not the scoreboard. The louder take: a huge chunk of the field is PE-backed anyway, so "avoid PE" as your only filter is like refusing every restaurant because the chain exists somewhere else. What wrecks your Tuesday is governance — caseload, billables, whether clinical leadership can say no, how supervision actually works, whether there's a real ethics path when something feels off. Private equity isn't automatically the villain edit. The real villain—bad incentives—can show up anywhere, from a tiny BCBA-owned clinic to a big PE-backed company. **What people say to actually screen** When the thread gets useful, it stops being PE discourse and starts sounding like interview homework: - What's the real caseload — in writing? - Who owns clinical yes/no when billables push? - How often is supervision in person when the work is hard? - What happens on cancellations and non-billable time? - Is there a real ethics path — or vibes? If those answers are solid, ownership type matters less. If they're foggy, the logo won't save you. **Pair's Take** We don't match you off a LinkedIn ownership badge. We're not here for the logo. We're here for the receipts: caseload, clinical autonomy, supervision, and whether the culture can pass a green-flag check out loud. Some PE clinics will. Some tiny shops won't. Your career is too expensive to outsource to a rumor about who wrote the check. **Want clinics that already look like green flags?** Tell us your location, setting, schedule, salary goals, and non-negotiables. We'll show you what's open — and keep you posted when something that actually fits shows up. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/ownership-isnt-the-green-flag.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # Your BCBA Salary Offer Isn't a Marriage Proposal. You Can Negotiate. By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · September 22, 2026 A clinic offers you a number and your brain immediately goes: They picked me. I should just say yes. Girl. This is employment, not The Bachelor. You are allowed to ask questions, compare the whole package, and negotiate without apologizing. ## What to look at Base salary is only one part of the package. Put realistic bonus potential, PTO, insurance cost, retirement, CEU and licensure reimbursement, mileage, schedule, caseload, billables, and commute beside it. Pick an ideal, a target, and a floor before the conversation so you are deciding - not reacting. ## How much can you actually negotiate? A practical starting point is to counter about 5-10% above the initial base when your experience, specialty skills, schedule flexibility, supervision responsibilities, or local market data support it. If the offer is $80,000, ask for roughly $84,000-$88,000. A 10-15% ask may make sense when the offer is clearly below market or the role asks substantially more of you - be ready to explain why. If the salary band is tight, negotiate what changes the real value: signing bonus, extra PTO, a six-month review, lower billables, CEU or licensure reimbursement, mileage, protected admin time, or a lighter caseload. Tie the ask to evidence and tradeoffs. ## Ask this in the interview Is the range fixed or flexible based on experience? What percentage of BCBAs earned the full bonus last year? When is compensation formally reviewed? ## Pair's Take Know your worth, but know the job too. We are not finding you the biggest salary attached to the biggest dumpster fire. We are finding the package that makes sense for your life. ## Want to see available BCBA jobs near you? Maybe you're actively looking. Maybe you're just curious. Tell us your location, salary goals, setting, schedule, and non-negotiables. We'll show you what's available now - and keep you in the know when something that's actually your type pops up. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/how-to-negotiate-bcba-salary.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # The Questions That Actually Reveal What a Clinic Is Like By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · August 19, 2026 Most clinic interviews are a performance on both sides. You ask safe questions, they give safe answers, and six weeks in you find out what the job is actually like. Here's how to skip that part. **Instead of "what's your caseload like," ask this:** "Can you walk me through what a typical Tuesday looks like for a BCBA here?" Vague answers here are a red flag by themselves. A clinic that actually runs well can describe a normal day without hedging. **Instead of "do you offer good supervision," ask this:** "How often is supervision scheduled, and how often does it actually happen as scheduled?" There's a real gap between a policy on paper and what happens when things get busy. You want to know which one you're getting. **Instead of "what's the culture like," ask this:** "What's the most common reason someone leaves this role?" A clinic that's thought about this will give you a real answer. A clinic that's never asked itself this question probably hasn't done much to fix whatever the answer is. **Instead of "is there room to grow," ask this:** "Who was the last BCBA promoted or given more responsibility here, and what did that look like?" Specifics beat promises every time. **One more that most people skip:** "What would make someone a bad fit for this role?" If they can't answer, they either haven't thought it through or aren't being straight with you. Either way, useful to know before you sign anything. None of these questions are aggressive. They're just specific, and specific is the one thing a clinic that's overselling itself can't fake on the spot. This is exactly the kind of digging our Green Flag Assessment does before a clinic ever gets access to our network, so you're not the one stuck doing detective work in a 30 minute interview. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/questions-to-ask-in-a-clinic-interview.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # Yes, You Can Negotiate Your BCBA Offer. Here's How. By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · August 12, 2026 A lot of BCBAs treat their salary offer like a grade they got back: you look at the number, you accept it, and you move on. Meanwhile the clinic wrote that number expecting to negotiate. Here's the part nobody tells you in grad school: salary is rarely a fixed line item. It's a starting bid. **What's actually negotiable, more often than you'd think:** - Base salary, especially if you're bringing a specialty (feeding, severe behavior, verbal behavior) the clinic actually needs - Caseload size and composition, not just the number attached to your paycheck - Sign-on bonus, particularly for harder-to-fill locations or start dates - PTO and CEU stipend, when the base salary itself is genuinely fixed - Supervision ratio and support staff, which affects your day-to-day far more than an extra thousand dollars a year **How to actually do it, without it being awkward:** 1. Get the offer in writing before you respond to anything. 2. Ask what flexibility exists before naming your own number. Something like: "Is there room to talk through the offer?" opens the door without putting you on the defensive. 3. If you counter, anchor it to something real, market data, a competing offer, a specialty you bring, not just "I was hoping for more." 4. If the salary truly won't move, negotiate something else on the list above instead of walking away empty-handed. The clinics worth working for expect this conversation and don't punish you for having it. If a clinic gets weird or defensive the moment you ask a question about your own offer, that's information too. We coach every BCBA we place through exactly this conversation, because a good clinic and a good number should both be true at once. You shouldn't have to choose. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/how-to-negotiate-your-bcba-salary.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # What Should a BCBA Actually Get Paid? By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · August 5, 2026 Every BCBA asks this at some point, usually right before an offer lands in their inbox: is this number good, or am I about to get played? Here's the honest answer. There is no single "normal" BCBA salary. There's a range, and where you land in it depends on a handful of things that actually matter, plus a bunch of noise clinics use to make a mediocre offer sound competitive. **What actually moves the number:** 1. **Setting.** Clinic-based, home-based, school-based, and telehealth roles all price differently, and "differently" doesn't always mean what you'd guess. 2. **Caseload.** A lower base salary with a sane caseload can beat a higher one that quietly expects you to carry 15+ clients. 3. **State and local billing rates.** Insurance reimbursement varies a lot by state, and that ceiling shapes what a clinic can realistically pay without operating at a loss. 4. **Supervision load.** Are you getting paid more to supervise more RBTs, or just getting handed more people with no bump? 5. **Bonus structure.** A flashy bonus on paper is worth exactly nothing if the caseload or productivity target attached to it is unrealistic. **What doesn't actually matter as much as clinics want you to think:** years of experience alone. A BCBA with three years at a well-run clinic with real supervision and reasonable caseloads is often worth more, and paid more, than someone with seven years of burnout and no support. The real move isn't memorizing a number. It's asking the right questions before you sign anything, so you know whether the number in front of you reflects a genuinely well-run clinic or a clinic that just knows what number gets people to say yes. That's the whole reason Pair ABA vets clinics before we ever put you in front of one. We already know which offers hold up. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/bcba-salary-what-to-actually-expect.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # The BCBA Job Market: What's Actually Changed By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · February 3, 2026 The number of certified BCBAs has grown fast, and so has the number of clinics competing for them. That's good news in theory: more options. In practice, it means more job postings that all sound identical, and more pressure to just take the first offer that shows up. A few things worth knowing before you start applying: 1. **Compensation ranges vary more by clinic quality than by state.** Two clinics in the same city can differ by tens of thousands of dollars for a comparable role, and the difference often tracks with how well-run the clinic actually is. 2. **"Fully remote supervision" is not the same everywhere.** Ask what that actually looks like week to week. 3. **The best roles rarely stay posted long.** Clinics that are genuinely well run don't have trouble filling seats, which is part of why word of mouth (and vetted networks) matter. This is exactly the gap Pair ABA is built to close: we already know which clinics are worth your time, so you're not starting from zero every time you look. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/bcba-job-market-what-changed.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # Green Flags vs. Red Flags: What to Actually Look for in a Clinic By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA · January 15, 2026 Every BCBA job posting says the same things: "supportive team," "growth opportunities," "we're like a family." None of that tells you anything. Here's what actually matters when you're sizing up a clinic. ## Green flags - **Caseload numbers they can actually explain.** If a clinic can tell you exactly how many clients you'll carry and why that number, that's a good sign they've thought about sustainability. - **Supervision that shows up on a calendar.** Not "we'll figure it out," an actual recurring time. - **Leadership who answers hard questions directly.** Ask about turnover. Watch how they respond. ## Red flags - Vague answers about caseload "it depends" with no follow-up. - Supervision framed as a formality instead of a real clinical relationship. - Any version of "we're like a family" used to explain away boundaries. If you wouldn't accept these answers from a partner, don't accept them from an employer either. --- Source: https://pairaba.com/blog-posts/green-flags-vs-red-flags-bcba-clinic.html · The Pair Post, Pair ABA (https://pairaba.com/) --- # 5 Ways ABA Clinics Can Overcome the BCBA Recruiting Shortage By Liat Sacks, Founder, Pair ABA Every clinic director knows the struggle: you have a waiting list of clients, but not enough BCBAs to supervise them.
