Your BCBA Salary Offer Isn't a Marriage Proposal. You Can Negotiate.
A clinic offers you a number and your brain immediately goes: They picked me. I should just say yes. Girl. This is employment, not The Bachelor. You are allowed to ask questions, compare the whole package, and negotiate without apologizing.
What to look at
Base salary is only one part of the package. Put realistic bonus potential, PTO, insurance cost, retirement, CEU and licensure reimbursement, mileage, schedule, caseload, billables, and commute beside it. Pick an ideal, a target, and a floor before the conversation so you are deciding - not reacting.
How much can you actually negotiate?
A practical starting point is to counter about 5-10% above the initial base when your experience, specialty skills, schedule flexibility, supervision responsibilities, or local market data support it. If the offer is $80,000, ask for roughly $84,000-$88,000. A 10-15% ask may make sense when the offer is clearly below market or the role asks substantially more of you - be ready to explain why.
If the salary band is tight, negotiate what changes the real value: signing bonus, extra PTO, a six-month review, lower billables, CEU or licensure reimbursement, mileage, protected admin time, or a lighter caseload. Tie the ask to evidence and tradeoffs.
Ask this in the interview
Is the range fixed or flexible based on experience? What percentage of BCBAs earned the full bonus last year? When is compensation formally reviewed?
