Ownership Isn’t the Green Flag

Newer BCBAs are trying to avoid the wrong companies like their careers depend on it. Fair. But Reddit came with a plot twist: PE ownership might not be the red flag you think it is.

The twist Reddit keeps repeating

Ownership is not the scoreboard.

The louder take: a huge chunk of the field is PE-backed anyway, so "avoid PE" as your only filter is like refusing every restaurant because the chain exists somewhere else. What wrecks your Tuesday is governance — caseload, billables, whether clinical leadership can say no, how supervision actually works, whether there's a real ethics path when something feels off.

Private equity isn't automatically the villain edit. The real villain—bad incentives—can show up anywhere, from a tiny BCBA-owned clinic to a big PE-backed company.

What people say to actually screen

When the thread gets useful, it stops being PE discourse and starts sounding like interview homework:

  • What's the real caseload — in writing?
  • Who owns clinical yes/no when billables push?
  • How often is supervision in person when the work is hard?
  • What happens on cancellations and non-billable time?
  • Is there a real ethics path — or vibes?

If those answers are solid, ownership type matters less. If they're foggy, the logo won't save you.

Pair's Take

We don't match you off a LinkedIn ownership badge. We're not here for the logo. We're here for the receipts: caseload, clinical autonomy, supervision, and whether the culture can pass a green-flag check out loud. Some PE clinics will. Some tiny shops won't. Your career is too expensive to outsource to a rumor about who wrote the check.

Want clinics that already look like green flags?

Tell us your location, setting, schedule, salary goals, and non-negotiables. We'll show you what's open — and keep you posted when something that actually fits shows up.
