# Yes, You Can Negotiate Your BCBA Offer. Here's How.

A lot of BCBAs treat their salary offer like a grade they got back: you look at the number, you accept it, and you move on. Meanwhile the clinic wrote that number expecting to negotiate.

Here's the part nobody tells you in grad school: salary is rarely a fixed line item. It's a starting bid.

**What's actually negotiable, more often than you'd think:**

- Base salary, especially if you're bringing a specialty (feeding, severe behavior, verbal behavior) the clinic actually needs
- Caseload size and composition, not just the number attached to your paycheck
- Sign-on bonus, particularly for harder-to-fill locations or start dates
- PTO and CEU stipend, when the base salary itself is genuinely fixed
- Supervision ratio and support staff, which affects your day-to-day far more than an extra thousand dollars a year

**How to actually do it, without it being awkward:**

1. Get the offer in writing before you respond to anything.
2. Ask what flexibility exists before naming your own number. Something like: "Is there room to talk through the offer?" opens the door without putting you on the defensive.
3. If you counter, anchor it to something real, market data, a competing offer, a specialty you bring, not just "I was hoping for more."
4. If the salary truly won't move, negotiate something else on the list above instead of walking away empty-handed.

The clinics worth working for expect this conversation and don't punish you for having it. If a clinic gets weird or defensive the moment you ask a question about your own offer, that's information too.

We coach every BCBA we place through exactly this conversation, because a good clinic and a good number should both be true at once. You shouldn't have to choose.
